• The Stari Most, or Old Bridge, spanned the Neretva River, which flows through Mostar,in Bosnia Herzegovina, for 427 years. It was built in the 16th century by the Ottomans and was destroyed on November 9, 1993 during the Croat-Bosniak War (which took place during the larger Bosnian War). After the war, several international organisations, including UNESCO and the World Monuments Fund, formed a coalition to rebuild the bridge and the surrounding area. In 2001, reconstruction began with the aim to use similar technology and the same local materials as the original. The rebuilt bridge was inaugurated on 23 July 2004.

 • Gibraltar’s Barbary Macaques are the only wild population in Europe and number around 300 animals in 5 family groups. Although their origins are disputed, they probably arrived as pets of the Moors during their occupation of Spain.

Although they are often called Barbary apes or rock apes because they don’t have tails, the Macaques are actually monkeys.

 • It was love at first sight when I saw this bicycle leaning against the bright yellow row house in Nyboder. Originally built as a naval barracks, these long rows of golden houses still house navy, army and air force personnel, but are also open to civilian renters. The colour has become so iconic; it’s referred to, by Danes, as ‘Nyboder Yellow.’
